At a time when nonprofit leaders and fundraisers work within and with increasingly diverse philanthropic environment and audiences, understanding how to harness the power of cultural diversity is essential. This session is based on many years of experience and research on the topic, and especially on the recently-published book, Diversity and Philanthropy, Expanding the Circle of Giving, by Lilya Wagner, the presenter.  This session includes information and insights about the effects of culture and traditions on giving, information on specific population groups and their cultures, traditions and practices in North America that affect and influence philanthropy. Real-life examples enhance the session as well as suggestions for being a culturally-proficient professional. Read more.

"Ultimately we believe our decisions are consistent with our conscious beliefs when...our unconscious is running the show." (Howard Ross, 2008)  Our sector has fallen behind others in meeting Diversity & Inclusion goals.  Research indicates a likely cause underlying this problem is often unconscious bias which plays a significant role in decisions such as hiring, promoting, firing.  The good news: there are proven strategies for increasing awareness of unconscious bias and changing behaviors toward achieving a more inclusive sector--and world.  Read more.
